Denver to Aspen Private Shuttle & Car Service

Aspen sits 220 miles west of Denver International Airport, and the private transfer takes about 4 hours 15 minutes. The route follows I-70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel, over Vail Pass and through Glenwood Canyon, then turns south on Highway 82 for the last 40 miles into the Roaring Fork Valley. Rates start at $1,285 for an SUV seating five. Your chauffeur tracks the flight, meets you at baggage claim, and drives to the door of any hotel or residence in Aspen or Snowmass.

Distance and Drive Time from Denver to Aspen

The transfer from Denver International Airport to Aspen covers 220 miles and takes about 4 hours 15 minutes in normal conditions.

Three sections on this route close independently of each other: the tunnel, Vail Pass and Glenwood Canyon. A closure at any one of them changes the whole trip, which is why the Aspen transfer has a wider time range than Vail or Breckenridge. We check all three before dispatch and adjust the pickup time when the corridor slows down.

The Route: I-70 to Glenwood Springs, Then Highway 82

The first 180 miles follow I-70 west from Denver. The Eisenhower–Johnson Memorial Tunnel carries the interstate under the Continental Divide at 11,158 feet, and Vail Pass tops out at 10,662 feet twenty miles further on. Past Vail and Eagle, the road enters Glenwood Canyon, a 12-mile stretch between Exit 133 at Dotsero and Exit 116 at Glenwood Springs where the interstate runs on elevated decks above the Colorado River.

At Exit 116 the transfer leaves I-70 and turns south on Highway 82. The last 40 miles run up the Roaring Fork Valley through Carbondale, El Jebel and Basalt. This section has traffic lights, lower speed limits and commuter traffic through the towns, so it takes longer than the mileage suggests.

Three turn-offs matter near the end:

• Brush Creek Road at mile 35.4 – Snowmass Village
• Owl Creek Road at mile 38.5 – Buttermilk
• The Aspen roundabout at mile 39.9 – Maroon Creek Road to Aspen Highlands, straight on into town.

Glenwood Canyon Closures

Glenwood Canyon closes for a reason most drivers do not expect: rain. The slopes above the interstate burned in the 2020 Grizzly Creek Fire, and the burn scar still sheds mud, rock and debris in heavy downpours.

When the National Weather Service issues a Flash Flood Warning for the burn area, CDOT closes I-70 between Exit 116 and Exit 133 as a precaution, before anything reaches the road. If a debris flow does hit the highway, the closure lasts until crews clear it. In 2021 a series of slides kept the canyon closed for weeks.

The detours are long. Eastbound traffic is routed north on Highway 13 at Rifle, and the northern alternative through Steamboat Springs adds several hours to an Aspen transfer.

This is mainly a summer risk, during the monsoon storms of July and August. On days with a flood watch, we check the forecast the evening before and move the pickup earlier or route around the canyon before the warning goes up.

Independence Pass: Summer Only

Highway 82 also reaches Aspen from the east, over Independence Pass. The pass crosses the Continental Divide at 12,095 feet on a narrow road with tight switchbacks.

It is a seasonal route. CDOT closes the pass for winter in late October or early November – for the 2025–26 season it closed on November 17 – and reopens it the week before Memorial Day. Vehicles longer than 35 feet, including a vehicle and trailer combined, are banned at all times.

From November through May, every Denver-Aspen transfer runs through Glenwood Springs. There is no other paved route into Aspen in winter. Our alternate routes to Aspen page covers the pass and the other summer options in detail.

Colorado Traction Law on I-70

From September 1 through May 31, the Colorado Traction Law applies on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison. The Denver-Aspen route runs inside that stretch all the way to the canyon.

Vehicles need winter tires, all-weather rated tires or mud and snow (M+S) tires with at least 3/16-inch tread, or chains. The law applies to all-wheel drive vehicles too. The fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, rising to $500 plus $157 if the vehicle blocks the road.

Denver, Eagle or Aspen Airport

Three airports serve Aspen, and the right one depends on your flight, your group and the time of year.

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is the closest option, but it sits in a narrow valley and cancels or diverts flights in weather that other airports handle. It will also close completely from April 4 to November 19, 2027 for runway reconstruction. The 2026-27 ski season is not affected. From spring to late autumn 2027, Aspen travelers will need to fly into Denver or Eagle.

Denver International Airport has the widest choice of flights and fares, at the cost of the longest drive.

Private Car, Shared Shuttle, Bus or Rental

Bus. Bustang does not stop at Denver International Airport. From the airport, take the RTD A Line train to Denver Union Station, then Bustang’s West Line to West Glenwood Springs, a fare of $28. From Glenwood Springs, RFTA‘s VelociRFTA express runs up the valley to Aspen in about an hour. The whole trip is about six hours and works for travelers with light bags and a flexible schedule.

Rental car. You drive 220 miles of mountain interstate and two-lane valley highway, under the Traction Law from September through May, and then pay for parking in Aspen.

Private car. One fixed price per vehicle, not per person, with flight tracking and a drop-off at the door.

Downtown Aspen’s Pedestrian Mall

The center of Aspen is closed to cars. Cooper Avenue and Hyman Avenue are pedestrian malls between Mill Street and Galena Street, and Mill Street is closed between Hyman and Durant.

Most hotels sit on streets outside the mall – The Little Nell on Durant Avenue, its residences on Dean Street, Hotel Jerome and White Elephant on Main Street – and we drive to the entrance. For a condominium or rental inside the pedestrian area, we stop at the nearest point open to vehicles and carry the bags to the door.

Snowmass Village works the same way. Snowmass Mall and Base Village are pedestrian areas, and drop-off is at the hotel entrance or the nearest loading point.

Once you are in town, free RFTA buses connect downtown Aspen with all four ski areas, so you will not need a car during your stay.

Events That Fill the Calendar

Aspen’s ski season runs from late November to mid-April across four mountains: Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass. The busiest weeks are Christmas, Presidents’ Day and spring break.

Summer brings its own peaks. The Food & Wine Classic fills town in June, the Aspen Ideas Festival follows in early summer, and Jazz Aspen Snowmass runs concerts through the season.

Vehicles for these dates book out weeks ahead, and group transfers go first. We operate year-round at the same published rates.

Aspen to Denver Airport: How Early to Leave

The return is the longest leg to time correctly, because the drive alone takes 4 hours 15 minutes.

Weekdays. Leave Aspen 6 hours 30 minutes before departure. That covers the drive, bag drop and security at DEN, with a short buffer.

Sundays and the last days of holiday weeks. Leave an hour earlier. Eastbound I-70 backs up from Vail Pass to the tunnel through the afternoon.

Summer storm days. If a flash flood watch covers Glenwood Canyon, we move the pickup earlier or reroute before a closure goes up.

For morning flights, pickups at 2:00 or 3:00 AM are routine on this route. Book both directions together, since return pickup times are set by flight time and day of the week.
